Hundreds of Omanis protest peacefully for jobs

London (WAF): Hundreds of unemployed Omanis gathered today peacefully in front of the Ministry of Manpower. They demanded the ministry to accelerate the job-creation process.

On social media, pictures of the peaceful gatherings in Muscat and Salalah showed lines of young Omanis praying at times, and carrying posters with related demands. The demands include replacing expatriates with Omanis, and providing unemployment allowances.

After hours of the peaceful protest “five jobseekers were escorted in (the ministry’s building in Muscat) to meet with one of the ministry’s officials and to listen to the demands”, a source told WAF. Sources at the ministry were not available for comments immediately.

Last year, the government started the process to hire 25,000 unemployed Omanis. The step came after royal directions form Sultan Qaboos Bin Said, to provide job opportunities for Omanis in the government and private sectors. This number was announced as phase one and to be implemented within six months starting in December 2017.
