MUSCAT (WAF): Nasr bin Amer al-Hosani, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Labor for Labor, issued a circular abolishing the minimum wage for Omanis linked to academic qualification, provided that the applicable general minimum wage of 325 Omani Rials ($845) would be satisfied, regardless of the degree.

The circular – which WAF News has seen a copy of – issued yesterday, 21 September, stated that the step comes within the Fiscal Balance Program 2020-2024 plan (Tawazon), which includes two initiatives to review the imposed Omanisation rate policies and abolish the minimum wage.

The step is expected to remove the obstacle of registering a class of Omanis working in private sector companies without registering their contracts, given that the wage agreed upon between the worker and the employer does not match the minimum associated with the academic qualification.

On the other hand, the step can be seen as giving less weight to academic degree vis-a-vis skills.
