MUSCAT (WAF)- The US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Schenker will travel to Oman, and Saudi Arabia this week, US Department of State said in a statement.
Schenker’s trip, beginning this week and till 7 December, will start in the Omani capital, Muscat, where “he will meet with leaders to discuss regional security and economic cooperation, as well as a way forward on the conflict in Yemen,” the statement said.
On 5 December, the American official will head to Saudi Arabia, “to discuss the Yemen conflict and Gulf unity, and to bolster economic partnerships”.
On Monday, Sultan of Oman, Haitham bin Tariq, received a phone call from the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo. The two discussed developments in the region.
The region is witnessing an escalation in tone at the diplomatic level, against the background of the assassination of the Iranian nuclear scientist Dr Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, an operation condemned by the Sultanate and most of the Arab Gulf states.
